Strichen
Nestling under the brow of Mormond Hill, Strichen was founded in 1764. The 18th century, planned village of Strichen is only a ten minute walk from the cottage. Strichen has a population of around 1200 and lies some nine miles from the coast on the A981 south of Fraserburgh. It is perhaps the finest example of a planned Buchan village where the buildings illustrate a range of traditional styles and construction skills. Buchan Heritage Festival in mid-May
Most of the village has been designated an Outstanding Conservation Area since 1985. Each year the village hosts the Buchan Heritage Festival and the Doric Drama Festival which celebrate the unique music, poetry, language and culture of the North East. Shops in Strichen include a grocery store with Post Office, Pubs, Butcher, Baker and Chemist. Outstanding fishing is on offer along the nearby rivers Ythan, Deveron, Ugie, Dee and Don. To the north west is the beautiful town of Banff where the Adam Mansion, Duff House owned by the National Trust for Scotland is located. While on the coast you can follow the coastal trail running through many of the picturesque villages set in the cliffs, such as Crovie, Pennan, and Gardenstown. When you're on the coast don't miss the Troup Head RSPB sanctuary. The scenery is spectacular and the bird colonies are busy to say the least.
